A lampshade shapes the light, sets the mood, and can anchor an entire room. Here's how to choose the right one for your space.

Of all the decisions you make when decorating a room, the lampshade is one of the most underestimated. Get it right and it transforms the quality of light, adds a focal point, and pulls a whole interior together. Get it wrong and even the most carefully considered room can feel a little flat.

Here's are a few tips to help choose well.

How lampshades change a room

Every lampshade does two things: it controls how light is distributed, and it adds colour and pattern to the room even when the light is off. A pale, neutral shade diffuses light softly across a room. A deeper, more saturated shade — a Headland Teal or a Pool Ochre, for example — creates a warmer, more intimate pool of light and becomes a piece of visual interest in its own right.

This is why the lampshade is often the most effective single purchase you can make when refreshing a room. It changes the mood at the flick of a switch.

Choosing a colour

The most common mistake is choosing a lampshade that disappears into the room — a safe, neutral shade that adds nothing. A lampshade is an opportunity to introduce colour with confidence, because it's a relatively small surface area. A shade that feels bold on a swatch will feel considered and intentional in a room.

At Earthworks, our lampshade palette mirrors our cushion range — so if you're drawn to the coastal blues of our Cobalt or Blue Horizon shades, or the warmth of Burnt Orange or Coast Pink, you'll find a lampshade to match. This makes it easy to create a coherent interior.

Coordinating lampshades with cushions

One of the most effective interior styling tricks is to echo a colour from your cushions in your lampshade — or vice versa. You don't need to match exactly; in fact, a near-match is often more interesting than a perfect one. A Paths Teal lampshade alongside a set of Ocean Blues cushions, for example, creates a layered coastal palette that feels curated rather than coordinated.

If you're starting from scratch, choose your cushion set first and then select a lampshade from the same colour family. The lampshade then becomes the accent that ties the room together.

Where to use a statement lampshade

  • Beside a bed — a table lamp with a coastal print shade is one of the simplest ways to bring personality into a bedroom without redecorating
  • In a living room — a floor lamp or table lamp in a corner creates a secondary light source that makes a room feel layered and warm in the evenings
  • In a hallway — often overlooked, but a statement lampshade in a hallway sets the tone for the whole house. Our Lobster Pots Slate Grey or Paths Green shades work particularly well in this context
  • On a pendant fitting — if you're replacing a ceiling shade, a coastal print pendant can become the centrepiece of a dining room or kitchen

A note on quality

All Earthworks lampshades are printed in the UK using our original designs. The prints are the same designs used across our cushion and placemat ranges, so everything works together — whether you're building a complete coastal interior or simply adding one considered piece to a room you already love.
